INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of Study Literature
according to Roberts and Jacobs (1995 : 2) may be classified into four categories or genres: (1) prose fiction,
(2) poetry, (3) drama, and (4) nonfiction
prose. Usually the first three are classed as imaginative literature. From the various types of imaginative literature,
my choice falls on prose fiction, exactly
on novel, which is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and scenes. Novel is my only choice for I am
interested in it very much rather than any
other kinds of prose fiction.
After reading several novels, I then decided
to choose Aya kito works that is “1
Liter of Tears” as the subject of my study. I choose this novel because I am really impressed with the story which is very
touching. Through the explicit details
told during the true meaning of this title.
The story of Aya Kito, a 15 years old Japanese
girl who suffered from Spinocerebellar
Ataxia disease. For the rest of her life, she poured all the feelings and events experienced in a diary, until her
hands could no longer hold and move the
stationery. Her hope is very simple, she wanted to remember the last days of her life and to always remind herself not to give
up in life. Her passion for life is driven
by a great attention from family, friends, is also her lover.
1.2 Objective of Study There are three main
purposes of this study, they are: 1.
Applying what I got in my literary class so that the knowledge can be
realized or activated.
2.
Giving explanation about the meaning of the title in order to help the
literary students or anyone who is
interested in literature in learning and understanding Aya Kito’ story in 1 Litter of
Tears. I want to describe what this novel
about, positive things that can be taken, and how she struggle against her
disease.
3.
Giving contribution to scientific study with great expectation that the
readers may receive something valuable
from this paper.
1.3 Scope of Study There are so many aspects
can be explained in this novel, but in this opportunity I focus my writing only on the
meaning of the title.
1.4 Significance of Study This paper is very
important to me. It is a fulfillment of one of the requirements to complete my education in
Diploma III of English Study Program.
1.5 Method of Writing In order to write this
paper I conduct library research by using book, dictionaries and encyclopedia as my
references. I jot down all the important information that will be needed including
suitable information from internet to add
the source in completing actual writing.
