English Literature:Languages Style Used in the Namesake Film

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses background of the
study, research problems, objective of the study, significance of the
study, scope and limitation and definition
of key terms.

1.1. Background of the Study Language
and society can not be separated as single phenomenon. Chaika (1982:1) states that language and society are
so intertwined that is impossible to understand
one without the other. We use language to reveal or conceal our personal identity, our character, and our
background. It means that language shows
our personal identity as human being.

Based on the statements above,
personal identity is a part of society. We customarily take gender, ethnicity, and class
as given parameters and boundaries within
which create our own social identities (Chaika, 1982:1). Islam also discuss about social identity. As stated in al Quran (Al Hujarah: 13) O
mankind: We created you from a single (pair) of male and female, and We made you into nations and tribes, that you may
know each other. Verily the most honored
of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and well acquainted (with all
things).

This surah explains that Allah
divides people in many tribes/ethnics in order to know each other. Therefore, although
we live in a different place, we should
know and recognize each other. To know and recognize each other, we have to know their cultures, histories, rules
and languages. Although language is not
always related to race but it is always true that language is the important
factor or essential characteristic of
ethnic membership in many things. It was a social fact.

Dealing with the social fact,
language is a part of social phenomenon. As Trudgill states (1994; 27) language is social
phenomenon reflects three factors.

Those are: Physical environment
that is a circumstance or a place in which the group live; people who live in a small groups or in
a village have some differences in
speaking from one that lives in a town. This phenomenon happens because their environment is reflected in
their language. Social environment can be reflected in a language, especially
in the field of vocabulary and pronunciation.
The last is social values, a set of norms and tradition owned by a society. The norms and tradition can be
reflected in language because society

s norms and tradition are different from the others societies.

Because of the three factors
mentioned above, every group of people or society speaks differently. They have certain features
that are not owned by others. They even
create their own patterns and vocabularies; they use it to meet their own needs.

In this research, the writer discusses a
physical environment of language.

As people we can not separated
from the place which we live in. People
who live for certain periodic of
time in a new society naturally learn
the language used in that area by interacting to the people in that
community and by the time they learn and
understand them. It can be said that the
more they practice the language, the more
fluent they speak and understand what people said.

However, people cant avoid the style in communication, because it is so integral part of society. Style plays a great
part in how we communicate with someone;
we will choose a particular style which is suitable to the context. For instance, the language style will be different
when we are communicating with our
teacher or our friends. Therefore, it is clear that interaction can not go
ahead if someone does not speak with the
right style (Chaika, 1982:34).

Moreover, Chaika (1982:34) states
that style is so integral part of social functioning that interaction can not go ahead
if someone does not speak with the “right”
style. Whether the style is appropriate or not depends partially on the social identity of the speaker. If a style is
perceived as correct for a given speaker, then the respondent has to obey that style or,
at least, normally does. That is the important
of studying a language style since everyone does not always speak exactly in
the same way. There are some ways people use language style in communication.

Language style is the way people
manipulate others and control people in making
interactions, bring the massage that usually conveyed in words and meaningful sounds formally or informally.
Style may also tell the listeners on how to take what is being said: seriously,
ironically, humorously, dubiously, or in some other ways. In other term, language style is
how the way people use the language in
communication; it can be written or oral language.

In this research, the writer
focuses analyzing language style in the form of oral language. Language style uses all the
resources of language: tone of voice, different
way of pronouncing words, and the choice of the words and grammar.

Tone of voice can be felt when
the speaker says something in certain situation or condition, whether, the speaker gives a
question or statement, ofcourse it can be
felt from the tone of voice, the different ways of pronouncing sounds, the choice of the words and grammar that each of
them chooses the word and grammar
differently.

The writer is interested in investigating
language style of The Namesake film script.
Film is a term that encompasses individual motion pictures, the field of film as an art form, and the motion picture
industry. Films are produced by recording
images of the world by cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or special effects.

Furthermore, film pictures
cultural artifacts created by certain cultures, which reflect those cultures, and in turn,
affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular
entertainment and powerful method for educating-or
indoctrinating-citizens. The visual elements of film gives motion pictures a universal power of communication.
Some films have become popular worldwide
attractions by using dubbing or subtittle that translate the dialogue.

The Namesake film is a 2007 film
which was released in the United States on
March 9, 2007, followed screenings at film festivals in Toronto and New York City. It was directed by Mira Nair and is
based upon the novel The Namesake by Jhumpa
Lahiri, who appeared in the movie. Sooni Taraporevala adapted the novel to a screenplay. The film received very
positive reviews from American critics (http://www.movie.net/thenamesake.htm).

The film describes the marriage of Ashima and Ashoke, and their life in US. Actually there are many cultural
differences between India and US. In India, where family values are closely guarded, the
notion of separation from children is not
so commonplace as it is in the Western world.
The settings of this film are in
India and New York City.
