CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This
chapter discusses the
background of the
study, statements of the problems,
objective of the study, scope and limitation of the study, significance of the study, and definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study Every
group in society
has a language
which is different
from other, as explained
in Al-Qur’an (QS. Ar-Ruum, 30: 22): “And
among His Signs are the creation of the heavensand the earth, and the difference of your languages and color.
Verily, in that are indeed signs for men
of sound knowledge”. (QS. Ar-Ruum, 30: 22) Based on the above verse, we understand that
every group in society has a language
used by more that one society; it does notindicate that the language used has
a similar vocabulary
or pattern. For
instance the diction
“taxis = cab, pavement
= sidewalk, and petrol station = gas station” which is similar in meaning but different in diction. The first dictions
are used in America and the second ones are
used in British. In every group of society, there are many different patterns
of language used
called as variation
of language and
it is closely
tighten to the culture
of the society.(Elaine 1982) People use
language in their
everyday conversation to
share ideas, information,
experience, and knowledge.
Without language as
the means of communication,
it would be difficult, probably impossible for people to express their wants. Moreover each person has, his, or
her own styles in order to express what
he or she
wants to share.
Thus, it will
be easier for
the addresses to understand
the addressers conversations, information, experience, and knowledge if they are familiar with the addressers
language style. As we know nobody speaks the
same style even though
he or she
speaks the language
style. Thus, actually language style makes one person different from
other person.(Traugott and pratt 1980) Latief
(in Rahardjo, 2002:
X) says that
language also functions
as a medium
of communication. People
use language that
consists of linguistics features such a word to communicate to others.
The words themselves are actions but
not the cause
of the attitude.
They just reflect
them, an uttered
word is an action because
it takes place
in time, performs
by some people,
and requires physical
movement (of the
vocal organs). Another
source of variation
in an individual’s speech occurs based on the
sentence structure and it differs from the gradation
of speech style.
In this case,
the language style
is the selection
of linguistics forms that differs
in the sentence structure in the form of words. The language
used by student
of tourism school
in their communication shows
the classifications of
language in term
of their formality
from the formal
to very informal one.
The Students
of Tourism School
at Merdeka University
can be a tour
guide. Tour guide is someone who
communicates directly with the native speaker and
connected with the
communication because almost all
of the activities
are required to speak with
various people. Merdeka University is an old and famous institution educating only in tourism program.
It also has tourism information for everyone who
wants to know
more about or
East Java the
object of interest around it. In addition, Merdeka
Universityprovide tour guide to conduct the
tour.
Actually, in order to be able to
communicate with the native speakers, tour guides must be able to speak their language.
However, English is the best solution to connect
people with two
different languages. Meanwhile,
conversation is to build relationship
through personal expression,
to find out
information, and to compare views
with others. A tour guide
in guiding the
tourists is called international
communication refers to
any communication both
oral and written which is taking place between people from
differentcountries (Dulek and Fielden, 1990:415). As
a tour guide,
oral communication especially
speaking is more prominent
than the other communicating skills.
Understanding of the language
style used by native speaker is required to help a tour guide to communicate effectively.
Thoseare done by tour guides in order to
improve their service
in term of
quality in guiding.
Moreover, it will make the
native speaker and a tour
guide closer because
native speaker prefer someone who understands them while having tour.
This research is focused on the
language style as basic theory of research, and especially chosen since there have not
been anyresearchers who investigated the students
of tourism school using
the theory of
language style. Furthermore, this study has a relation to the previous
researches on the same field. Az Zahrah (2006)
used the studied language style used in blogospare. She found that there were five categories of language style used in
blogospare there are; consultative, casual,
deliberative, oratorical, and intimate. Actually, not many themes related to language
style can be
found by researches.
Some researchers inspired
this research such as Solikha
(2003), who focused her study on the theory of language style
to investigate the
utterances of military
members of kompi
panser 31 Sidoarjo.
The result of
her study was
that language style used
by military members based on formal-informal situation.
Asrofi (2005) focused his research on the language style and the translation
procedures in the translation of Murice’s “Emotionally
Intelligent Parenting”. He
found that there
are three types
of language style used in
translation book namely
formal, informal, and colloquial styles.
Based on the research, the
researcher wishes to getknowledge to describe language style
used by students
of tourism school.
Another reason is
that the researcher
wants to know
the importance of
understanding the way of
communication and application of
language style forguiding. Thus, the researcher is interested in writing the research entitled
“Language Style Used by Students of Tourism
School at Merdeka University of ”.
1.2 Statements of the Problems Derived from the background of the study
above, this study is conducted to answer
the following problems: 1. What types of language style are used by the
students of Tourism School at Merdeka University
of in
communicating directly with
the native speaker? 2.
What is the
highest usage frequency
of language style
used by students
of Tourism School at Merdeka
University of in communicating directly with the native speaker? 1.3
Objective of the Study Concerning
with the problems of the study stated above, the objective of the study is: 1.
To describe the
language styles which
are used by
students of Tourism School at Merdeka University of in communicating directly with the native speaker.
2. To describe the highest usage frequency of
languagestyle used by students of Tourism
School at Merdeka University of in
communicating directly with the native
speaker.
1.4 Scope and Limitation The
researcher focused the
study to investigate
and discuss about the language styles
used by students
of Tourism School
at Merdeka University
of in communicating directly with the native
speaker. Language style in this research
is used Chaer theory of language style. The student of Tourism School is someone who learns the tourism program at
Merdeka University of .
The scope
of the study
is within the
area of language
