English Literature:A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Intimate Language in Camp Rock

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter background of study, research
problems, objectives of the study, and
significances of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study One
of the functions of language is to express intimacy: a close relationship between participants. It can be a
relationship among families or friends.
Fasold (1990:4) in Artika (2008) argues that intimacy may include people can be equally powerful in social order, but
be from different parts of the country, and
be different, if equally respected, profession. According to Chaer (2004:71), the most informal language is the intimate
language.

Whatever the language, it must be
understood by participants. Fishman (1972)
said that the important one is „who speaks what language to whom, when and to what end. For
example, very formal language will be used when the president have a speech in front of the
citizen. It happens because the context is formal, and has special purposes to deliver
such kind of information. The conditions
will be completely different when a father talks to a mother. Father will usually use intimate language with mother as
far as it can be understandable.

Intimate language used when both
participants have a close relationship. It will be strange when we use intimate language
to speak with people that we do not
know well. For example, between friends, they commonly use the word honey, baby, or another call name specially
used in their environment only.

There are some reasons of using
intimate language: (1) they feel more comfortable
as the situation is informal. It will skip the distance between the participants. For example, when the boss
speaks with the employee in the coffee shop,
they look like friend, which is different from the conditions in the office;
(2) another reason is that
communications will run easier because they do not have a burden to express what they want.

Some researchers have
investigated intimate language. For example, Artika (2008) from Muhammadiyah University of
Surakarta, She analyses the use of
intimate address system in the drama films from a sociolinguistic approach.

She observes the intimate
addresses in films entitled “Anna and the King” , “Bridget Jones Diary”, “If Only”, “Music and
Lyrics” , “Prince and Me (The Royal
Wedding)” and “The Lake House“. She found several uses of intimate address system and the reasons of using it.
The identification of context of conversation
shows that the intimate address system sometimes is used not only between the people that have an intimate relationship,
but also between the people who do not
have the intimate relationship; also, the intimate address system is used not only in informal situation but also
in formal situation. The reasons of employing
the intimate address system include showing intimacy, showing respect and showing power.

Wildayanti (2004) in Artika
(2008) discusses “A Sociolinguistics Analysis of Politeness in Addressing System in Pretty
Woman Manuscript”. She analyzes politeness
principles in a system by employing SPEAKING theory, Tu and Vous theory and politeness strategy. She found six
kinds of Address System (1) Address
using name, (2) Address system using close relationship, (3) Address system using intiusing intimate terms, (4)
Address system using kinship terms, (5) Address
system using respectful terms, and (6) Address system using mockeries.

Nurnaningsih (2005) in Artika
(2008) examines address term used in Aristocratic
movie manuscript”. She focuses on the use of honorific, Tu and Vous principle. SPEAKING formula of Hymes is used
to analyze the data. She found some
reasons of the use of address term: showing respect, power, intimacy or solidarity, anger and insult.

From the three previous studies
above, the researcher conclude that all of them focus only on the intimate address system
and the reasons of it. The present study,
however, focuses not only on the intimate address system but also on the intimate language which cover intimate
address, too. The title of the study is “A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Intimate Language
in Camp Rock. The theory of Joos, politeness theory and Hymes on SPEAKING are
used to analyze intimate language.

1.2 Research Problems Based on the background
above, this study formulates the following questions: 1.
What kinds of intimate languages are used by the characters in Camp Rock
? 2.
What are the purposes of intimate language used by the characters in
Camp Rock ? 1.3 Objectives of the Study In line to the
problems mentioned above, the objectives of this study are to: 1. To describe the intimate languages used by
the characters in Camp Rock.

2. To describe the purposes of intimate language
used by the characters in Camp Rock.

1.4 Significance of the Study The result of this
study will provide theoretical and practical significance.

Theoretically, the result of this
study will show that the reason for using a certain intimate language may be influenced by the
speakers intention to express politeness
or avoid a distance among the participants. Practically, the results of this study is useful for the teacher or
lecturer who wants to learn more about intimate
language, as the subjects in this study include actors in the movie. From institutional point of view, the result of
this study will be useful for students who are interested in studying more about intimate
language.

1.5 Scope and Limitation In analyzing the data,
the researcher focuses only on the intimate language, produced in Camp Rock movie. The
intimate language data are also limited
because they are taken only from one movie. In analyzing the use of intimate language, this research describes the
intimate expressions and the purpose of
using it in that movie.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms There are a number of
terms which should be defined in this study.

a. Intimate language It is a kind of language
used among close friends or family. This language uses some private codes, short words,
and with unclear articulation. It happens
because both participants share idea (Joos in Chaer, 2004:70).

b. Camp Rock This is a movie telling about the
romantic musical drama. It is an audition
to find a singing partner. This is a teenage drama using some special languages of teenagers. Intimate
languages are also expressed in this
movie: between the main characters and their family, also with their friends.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This
chapter covers definitions and theories related to the intimate language and the supporting theory help answer
the research problems.
