1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study In a
dictionary of literary terms and literary theory (1977:Perface), the main definition of literary term thus: “of or
pertaining to, or of nature of, literature,
polite learning, or books and written compositions; pertaining to that kind of written composition which has value on
account of it’s qualities of form.
Using the literary terms as
extremely important because they are the medium through which a reader interacts with a piece
of literature. Literature includes plays,
essay, novels, poetry, and short stories.
A novel usually tells of human
life in their interaction with the environment
and each other. In a novel, the authors make every effort to direct with the reader to the images of the reality
of life through the stories contained in the novel.
Holderness says that novel is attempting to give the reader the impression that it is “emanating life” in
every direct way.
Characters have conversations
with each other to enable parts the reader to learn about whom they are, what role they are
playing and about the events of the novel.
Characters are the persons in a narrative of dramatic work of at such as novel, play, or film. A novel can, but doesn’t
need to, have many characters. In novel,
character can be differentiated into several kinds based on point of view of the appellation to be done. Identify character
traits the main character displays. An author
can reveal character traits in a description of the character's appearance or in how he or she acts and what other
characters in the story say about her or him.
1.2 Objective of the study The
writer wants to know more about the main characters that can be found in Olen Steinhauer’s novel the tourist:
Milo Weaver, Tina Weaver, Janet Simmons
and Primkov. What they do and how they look like.
1.3 Scope of the study It is
important to make the limitation of the study to avoid the readers of getting confused. Olen steinhauer described
the character in such wonderful ways that
keep the readers guessing ang guessing. Character is one of the most important elements of fiction; the writer is
interested in studying it, especially on the main characters. The writer wants to
describe physical appearance of the characters,
to explain the attitude of the characters through what they say and do in the novel.
1.4 Significance of the study The
finding of this study expected to be significant to the readers of literature, because they can show the
inspiration, opinion and idea through their reading. From this paper, i hope the readers
wiil get some knowledge about intrinsic
elements in the novel The Tourist, especially about the main characters.
Then this paper can improve the
English Diploma Student’s interest in studying literature.
