CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents background
of the study, problems of the study, objectives
of the study, significance of the study,scope and limitation of the study and definition of the key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study Language is a social phenomenon. It is a
fundamental part of human’s interaction
in society, and a form of behavior. Thefunctions of language are as an instrument of communication between
individual, andalso a symbol of social identity.
People cannot live without language because it is needed for daily life’s activities. We cannot imagine how people can
cooperate one another without language.
Language is used to express idea, emotionand feeling. In other words, language is actually the relation of what one
is thinking or the oral representation of
human thought.
In the process of communication
with other persons,there will be many possibilities
of misunderstanding and misinterpreting of the meaning from the language we use. Therefore, understanding
lexical and contextual meaning is very crucial
to get successful interaction.
Indonesia has the largest economy
in Southeast Asia, and it is one of the emerging
markets economic in the world. It has a market-based economy in which the government plays a significant role
by owning more than 164 state-1 14 owned enterprises and administers prices on
severalbasic goods, including fuel, rice
and electricity. In the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis that began in mid-1997, the government took custody
of asignificant portion of private
sector assets through acquisition of nonperforming bank loans and corporate assets through the debt
restructuring process.
Recently, economy has a profound
impact on our everyday lives. The progressive
development of economy in the world also influences the uses of language. The influence is shown in the use of
terms in this field, since it is a kind of
communication, which uses language as its media,so it is necessary for the student in general and business person in
particular to learn more about the economic
terms in order to obtain general understanding. The understanding provides a foundation for improving
communication among economists or business
persons.
There are some terms in
economics, which have theirown meanings that are hardly found in ordinary English
dictionary. Furthermore, they are very difficult
for the writer as language student who studies only language in understanding economics, and only some people
know about the specific English economic
terms. Understanding economic terms are helpful for the people in the working of economy.
Like many other students who are
not mature in economy, the writer has similarity
in understanding this process. Indeed, the writer chooses to study on economic terms because she wants to know more
aboutthe terms which are usually used in
daily lives. Sometimes people get difficulty in interpreting the 2 15 economic terms, which are often in economic
report in newspapers, magazines and also
economic news program on television. Besides that, economic is very important in our lives, because they are part
of economy and study the effects of the
material growth and welfare to keep the survival of modern nation with a population growth.
In this study, the Jakarta Post
is as the object ofthe research specified on its economic terms in Economic Columns. There
are several economics terms in the
Jakarta Post. The Jakarta Post is the first Indonesia newspaper which is
written in English.
The Economic columns of the
Jakarta Post are investigated in this study for it is the most important part of newspaper
and denote to the essence of the news
besides capturing the reader's attention in the first time.
From the explanations above and
the realities, the writer tries to analyze the English terms of economic and business
articlesused in Jakarta Post newspaper.
Therefore, she discusses the topic in her thesis entitled “A Semantics Analysis on Economic Terms Used in Economic
Columnsof The Jakarta Post”.
1.2 Problems of the Study Based
on the background of the study, the followingproblems are formulated: 1. What
are the lexical meanings of the economic termsused in the economic columns of the Jakarta Post? 3 16 2. What
are the contextual meanings of the economic terms used in economic columns of the Jakarta post? 1.3
Objectives of the Study Based on
the problems above, the objectives formulated as follows: 1. To
explain the lexical meanings of the economic terms used in the Jakarta Post 2. To
describe the contextual meanings of the economicterms used in the Jakarta Post 1.4
Significances of the Study This
study is expected to give contributions to thereaders, especially English Department student and businessman.
Firstly, this study is expected
to give contribution to English Department student of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic
University of Malang. The writer hopes
that this study will develop the students’ knowledge about semantic.
Therefore, the students do not
only understand theoretical points of view, but also can apply and give description on lexical
meaning analysis.
Secondly, this study is expected
to give contribution to businessman. The writer hopes that this study will give more
knowledge in reading and understanding
the newspapes, especially economic coloumns.
4 17 1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study The
writer limits the study on the economic terms in the economic columns of the Jakarta Post from April th up to nd 2009, which contain 12 articles and 22 columns. In economics terms,
the writer found that many books and
literature which are used by businessman and economic students have many terms and special meanings. This study
intended to identify, collect, and describe those terms.
1.6 Definition of the Key Terms In definition of the key terms, the writer
wants toeliminate the ambiguity dealing
with the title of this study in order to make them clear for the readers. The following is the definition of the key terms
used in the title: 1. Semantics is the branch of linguistics, which
studies about the meaning of words,
phrases and sentences.
2. Economics is the social science that studies
about production, distribution, and
consumption of goods and services.
3. The Jakarta Post is a daily English language
newspaper published in Indonesia. The
paper is owned by PT Bina Media Tenggara, and the head office is in Jakarta. The newspaper was
launched on 25 April 1983.

descriptive meaning, expressive meaning, social meaning, contextual meaning and conceptual meaning).
