English Literature:Description of Idiomatic Expression Found in Guns N’ Roses songs



I. INTRODUCTION
1.1.
The Background of the Study Guns N' Roses (sometimes abbreviated as G N' R or GnR) is an American hard rock band that the band formed
in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in
1985. The band led Axel Rose. The band
has released six studio albums, three
album industries, and one live album while going through numerous line up changes and controversies since its
formation. Rose is the only consistent and
original member of Guns N' Roses. The band has sold more than 100 million albums
worldwide. (Wikipedia, 2011) G N’ R has one live album that is “Use Your
Illusion I”. “Use Your Illusion I”
consists of twelve songs. The writer only chooses three songs as the references. The songs are Back Off Bitch,
November Rain, and Garden of Eden.
The writer chooses “Use Your
Illusion I” because the album has a good and great love song lyric. Talking about rhythm, “Use
Your Illusion I” dominates the slow and
emotional feeling rhythm. Moreover, the writer finds the lyric which has some idiomatic expression found in G N’R
lyric. The writer chooses the songs from
this album because this album is all about Love Story of the writer. This album tells about love story which has some
truly meaning. In addition, the writer chooses
the songs because the writer feels that the album is interesting to study idiomatic expression. Lyrics of this album
have many idiomatic expressions that can
help the writer describing this study.
Every part of Human’s lives is
filled with languages. The language has an important role of communication in human life.
People use language as a tool to express
ideas and feelings. Language is a purely human and non instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotions, and
desire by means of a system voluntary
produced symbol (Sapir, 1921: 8). It means that language is used when we interact with other people socially or
emotionally. So, language is a medium of communication which plays a vital role in
human communication.
Palmer (1976: 6) said “I have suggested
that linguistics is the scientific study
of language. Linguistics has important role or components of language that include sound, the arrangement of words, and
meaning”.
In the repertoire of any
language, idiomatic expression constitute a special category of lexical items presenting a fixed
structure and a spesific behaviour language
use. Idioms though, display greater rigidity and structural complexity than individual words, which make them
uncomfortable elements in any theory of language.
An idiomatic expression is a phrase or a sentence that is generally fixed and sematically opaque or methaporical, as its
meaning is different from the al meaning
of the individual words in it. For this reason, it must be learnt as a whole unit. Idiomatic expressions are not a separate
part of the language which one can choose
either to use or omit; rather, they form an essential part of the vocabulary, and general tendencies of present-day English
are towards more and more idiomatic usage.
Idiomatic espression are also especially use in informal situation, and they have a stranger meaning than ordinary
words. (Campoy, 1944) Music has been called the language of the emotions. Music
also elusive state of mind. Music is
also an art dealing with the organization of song into patterns. Song is the most natural form of
music. Song also has characteristics in understanding
the significance. Furthermore, song can
not be separated from rhythm and lyric.
Rhythm is denotes the orderly movement of music in time.
Lyric is a collective words that find in song.
Song ally is simpler so that it is easier
to understand. On the contrary, the song writer uses idiomatic expression in the lyric. As a result, the hearer gets some
trouble in understanding the meaning of lyric.
Therefore, it is necessary to discuss about the idiomatic expression used in the song in order to make the hearer and
reader improving the meaning of the song.
(Machlis, 1955) Based on the explanation
above, the writer chooses title “ Description of Idiomatic Expression Found in Guns N’ Roses“.
In this study, the writer improve all
describe about idiomatic expression. Idiomatic expression is used to develop idiom which idiomatic expression is generally
fixed and sematically opaque or methaporical,
but its meaning is different from the al meaning. In addition the writer hopes that this study has advantages
for the reader and himself.
1.2 The Problems of the Study Based on the
background of study, automatically this problem of study are as the following : 1. What kind of Idiomatic
Expression is used in Guns N’ Roses songs? 2. What is the
Idiomatic Expression found in Guns N’ Roses songs understanding ? 1.3. The Objectives of the Study The
objectives of the study are : 1. To find out idiomatic expression used in Guns
N’ Roses songs .
2. To understand the idiomatic
expression used in Guns N’ Roses songs.
1.4. The Scope of the Study There are eight types of idiomatic expression
based on Lou’s theory, such as ;
idiomatic expression with adjectives and noun in combination, idiomatic expression with preposition or adverbs, two
word verbs, idiomatic expression in comparison,
idiomatic verbal expression, verbs and noun used together idiomatically, idiomatic adjective phrase,
verb and preposition. But in this paper, this description is only focused on the three
types of idiomatic expression found in Guns
N’ Roses, such as idiomatic verbal expression, idiomatic expression with adjectives and noun in combination, verb and preposition used together automatically.
1.5. The Significance of Study This paper is
expected to enrich the idiomatic expression study and add knowledge for student of language in terms
idiomatic expression. And also can help
the students or the readers to understand the meaning of songs.
