1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of the Study
It is
not easy to choose a suitable topic of paper. The writer has spent a lot of time to find and select the novel before
the writer finally decides to study one of
Karen Rose Smith’s novels “The Searching for Her Prince” that published in Jakarta by Gramedia pustaka in 2007 as a topic
of her paper.
Furthermore, the writer has
intentionally chosen the title for her paper “The Vanishing Prince by Karen Rose Smith
novel, the writer chooses the novel as
her topic because the writer is interesting in theme of the novel, and the
writer interests to description the
theme.
Theme is the meaning in the
story. (Nurgiyantoro, 1998:67), which means
the meaning that, is implied in a story. Theme is a central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work. Theme
is not a summary, but a central idea the
author wishes to communicate. (Wikipedia), which means message here, may be about life, society, or human nature. Theme
is important and needed to make a story,
because it is general basic idea thatsupports a literature. This general basic of course has been determined before by the
author to develop the idea of the story,
and it is also one of intrinsic elements of the novel.
1.2 The Scope of the Study There are many intrinsic elements that can be
descript in a novel, such as character, theme,
plot, setting, point of view, and style of writing. In order to avoid and overlapping description, the writer
focus only in description the theme of
The Searching for Her Prince novel. This paper consists of five chapters. They are introduction, the summaryof the novel,
theoretical background, the data and description,
conclusions and suggestions.
1.3 Purpose of the Study The writer has purpose when she decided to
write this paper. By writing this paper,
the writer wished to description more detail the theme of novel “The Searching for Her Prince” by Karen Rose Smith
to the readers. The writer also hopes
that this writing can fulfill one of requirement in order to complete the writer’s education in Diploma III of Department.
1.4 Significance of the study The significance of this description is to
enrich literary studies especially in
literature through novel as one genres of it besides drama and poetry and to increase readers’ comprehension about theme.
The writer hopes this description could
become reference for further study of literary works.
1.5 Method of the Study The main source of this paper is The Searching
for Her Prince novel. The writer read
the novel several times to understand the story especially about theme that portrayed in this novel. In writing this
paper, the writer applied that is by colleting
some books that reviewand related to the literature to get more materials to this paper. Besides that, the writer
browsed some references from internet for further information. After that, the writer
tabulated the data, and then the writer description
the theme of novel “TheSearching for Her Prince.”
