CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter
is elaborate on the research
context, focuses of the study, objectives
of the study,
significances of the study,
scope and limitation and the definition
of the key terms.
1.1 Research Context Human beings cannot live without making any
communication with others because
communication has an important role in the
society. In order to have a good communication
among society, people
need a mean
that can be
used to express their ideas or feelings. The media is
through language.
Allah says: Ÿ “Speak to him with
gentle words; perhaps he will ponder of fear”.
(QS. Thaahaa: 44) In
this verse, Allah
orders us to
use soft and
good language in our communication
and also told us to use the best words in showing our feelings to another person so they will understand what we
mean.

it is impossible to understand one
without the other. There is no human society that does not depend upon, is not shaped
by, and does
not itself shape
language. Every social
institution is maintained by language, law, religion,
government, education, the family-all
are carried on with language .
In line with Chaika, another
expert of linguistics stated that language is an essential
perfect mean of
expression and communication
among every known people. It
is primarily a
system of phonetic
symbols for the
expression of communicable thought and feeling .
Furthermore, in accordance with
the use of language, it’s can be used in two conditions, formal and informal one. In
formal conditions, for example in the class, meeting, seminar and other formal
conditionspeople use formal language.
While In informal condition like
in daily talking, they use informal
language in their communication. In
addition, language also
serves several functions.
First, language is
as a medium
of transferring information.
Second, language is
very useful mean
to establish and maintain social
relationship. The third
function language is as a tool to
show one’s expression or feeling, such as anger, sadness, happiness,
loneliness and others.
In this case,
the use of swear
words can be included
into the second function of language that people sometimes use.

meanto build harmony, for several communities
like punk and
street boy, unlike
common people who
use good choice of words in order
to build harmony withother people, they prefer to use another way to interlace their friendship,
thatis by using swear words.
Swear words are offensive words
that relate to manythings, like animal, deity,
death, madness and sex. According to Hughes,he categorized swear words into six types of swear words. Those are sex,
madness, excretion, religion, animal and
nationality.
Some people consider that swear words is one
of ways in communication to built
harmony. However, for
the rest of
people, especially for
moslem community, they do still
believe that actually swear words are taboo and should not be spoken because swear words are
categorized in bad words. Therefore God forbid
us to use it. As it is mentioned in holy Quran (17: 53) Allah said: ≅è %u ρ “Ï Š$t 7Ï èÏj 9 ( #θä 9θà )t ƒ É L© 9$ # } ‘Ï δ ß | ¡ô mr & 4 ¨

∩∈⊂∪ ”tell my worshiper, that they should say words
that are the finest, satan would arouse

verse above explains
about the instruction from Allah
for us to use good words
only in communicating
with others. It
means that on
the contrary, Allah forbid us to use bad words like swear
words.
To get
more understanding about
swear words, these
kind of words
are usually used
by low class
and uneducated people
like street boy
and punk community, for example, rabbit, fuck, shit,
and piss. The word ‘fuck’, it occurs in many
situations and context, “oh my God it so
fucking bad”in this situation the word
fuck is used to show anger. In other occasion the same word is used to show friendliness
“don’t fuck this
up for me,
baby”. These examples
show that one swear
word may have many meaning and it can be usedin different situation. It’s same with Proteus statements, the same form of
an oath or a curse yields many meaning .
Swearing now
encompasses so many
disparate forms that
some broad distinctions need to be made at the outset.
Someoneswears by, someone swears that
(something is so), someone swears to (does something), someone swears at (somebody or something) and sometime people
swear asimple out of control to show
their emotion or anger .
Since swear
words become more
familiar day by
day, there are
many people who use them as a
part of their lifestyle. It’s same with Scott Silver tells in his
movie “8 mile
movie”. 8 mile
movie tells about
a young man,
his name is Jimmy.
He is a rapper with white skin and his friends are rappers from black skin.

without fear or favour and seems to be
part of a code that would help them to build a harmony among their group or community.
Indeed, for
most people, swear
words are bad
and usually it
is used to humiliate
other people. Nevertheless, in fact, not all of swear words are always in negative
meaning or to
insult. Swear words
can be used for
different purposes.
Swear words can be used as
identification among a society or a group. According to
Hughes (1991) swearing
can be used
to show familiarity,
friendliness or identity
among some communities.
Based on this
reality, the researcher
finally thinks that
it is necessary
to conduct a
research about swear
words to get knowledge of
what the swear
words are spoken
in “8 Mile”
and also how
the swear words are spoken by the
characters in “8 Mile”. In addition, the researcher, through
her research, wants
to show that
swear words in
fact does not
always mean negative things.
Swear words also one of way in communication for some group.
Finally, when people know about it, hopefully the misunderstanding that may be occurred when a swear word is uttered,
can be decreased.
