English Literature:The Intrinsic Analysis In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Novel Sherlock Holmes The Sign Of Four



INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of Study Literature is the art
of written works, and is not bond to published sources.
Literally translated, the word
literature means “acquaintance with letters” these letters are turned in kind of writing. The
writing itself is supposed to be fictitious.
It’s a fictitious narrative kind
of writing, literature also has another kind that is nonfiction.
Fiction is any form of narrative
which deals, in part or in whole, which events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary,
and invented by its author while nonfiction
is an account or representation of a subject which is presented as fact.
Nonfiction is a literary work
that is based on authentic data. But also that can be developed according to the author’s
imagination.
Novel is a narrative or story
carried by certain actors in characterization, setting and stages and sequence of a
particular story that contradicts the result of the author’s imagination, so having a story
(Aminuddin, 2002: 66). While M.
Saleh Saad and Anton M. Muliono
(in Tjahyono, 1988: 106) suggest the sense of prose fiction (fictional, prose narrative,
narrative) is a form of story or narrative prose that has a cast, imposition, events, and
the flow generated by the power imagination.
In novel, there are elements of
the building called the intrinsic elements.
Which include intrinsic elements,
namely: theme, plot, character, setting, and point of view
In this paper the writer discusses the elements of intrinsic that found
in Sherlock Holmes: the Sign of Four. We
know that Sherlock Holmes is a fiction created
by Arthur Doyle. This was the second Sherlock Holmes novel. This novels tells about how Holmes in solving the
case with his great analysis skills.
Writer tries to analyze about
elements of the novel such as characters, plot, point of view, setting, and theme. I hope by
discussing the novel, the readers can understand
more about the intrinsic of novel.
1.2 The Objective of Study The writer discusses
the intrinsic elements in novel the Sign of Four. The purpose is to find out about the intrinsic
elements and to understand about intrinsic
elements in a novel especially in novel the Sign of Four.
1.3 The Scope of Study The scope of this paper is
intrinsic elements in the novel the Sign of Four.
They are limited to theme, plot,
characters, setting, and point of view.
The theme is focused on
friendship and the characters are limited to main characters; and the setting is the place. And
point of view is the third point of view.
1.4 The Method of Study The writer reads and collects some literary
books which are relevant to the topic.
Finally writer combines the analysis result and arranged into complete paper.
The sources of data in this paper are a novel,
book, and. The first, the writer
selected quotation and statement from novel or book. After selected, the data must be analyzed. Then pull the
conclusions and described. Method usedin this paper is descriptive analysis 1.5 The Significance of Study The significance
of the study are 1. To enrich knowledge about novel especially
intrinsic element 2. To guide readers in
studying intrinsic element of novel 3.
To be a reference for the next researcher in analyzing the intrinsic elements of novel
